The application period for the 2013 Assistance to Firefighters grant program opened today with a month-long application period that will give departments an opportunity to share in $288 million in funding.
The primary goal of the Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) is to meet the firefighting and emergency response needs of fire departments and nonaffiliated emergency medical service organizations. Since 2001, AFG has helped firefighters and other first responders to obtain critically needed equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training and other resources needed to protect the public and emergency personnel from fire and related hazards.
The application period opened Monday, November 4th and the deadline to apply is Friday, December 6th at 5p ET.
There are several new facets of the program this year, including:
- A new EMS category which includes community paramedics, EMT-P level certified primary care providers.
- A new standard for ambulances, which must meet NFPA 1917: Standard for Automotive Ambulances, Edition 2013.
- Fire departments and nonaffiliated EMS orgsanizations can apply for vehicles under the component program Joint/Regional.
- State fire training academies are now eligible to apply for all AFG vehicle acquisition activities.
