Ottawa Firefighter Self-Extricates After Mayday, Fell Into Basement

An Ottawa firefighter self-extricated himself after falling through a floor into a basement at a fire Thursday afternoon, spokesman Marc Messier reported via Twitter.

fire_logoRapid intervention crews had lowered a hose to pull him out of the basement, but the firefighter was able to see light from a basement window and chose to exit on his own. He was not injured.

When crews arrived at the home at 4234 Thunder Road (map), they reported heavy smoke coming from a bungalow style residence.

Crews have pulled out of the house and evacuated due to heavy fire conditions. Firefighters have surrounded the home for defensive operations. There are no hydrants in the area and a water tanker shuttle is underway.

At 3:15P et, Messier reported that the main body of fire in basement and main floor appears out, however there still heavy burning in attic. Follow the incident live on Twitter here.
