The City of Schenectady was toned for a fully involved structure fire at 35 Moyston St on Christmas Day. The first arriving police units called back to the dispatcher and stated they had heavy fire coming from a house. On arrival Engine 1 called 2nd alarm and stated they had multiple working structures.
The fire quickly spread to other structures on the block. Schenectady Fire Department’s Truck 1 and Engine 1 set up master stream and deck gun operations with multiple working 2 ½ inch hand lines to fight the fire.
At least three buildings had collapsed in to the street and at one point flames were about 40 feet in the air. Crews ran in to all kinds of problems as they battled the fire. The freezing cold weather did not help at all. As the mist from the hand lines hit the Firefighters gear it was freezing almost instantly and loses in water pressure due to the demand on the city’s water system was an issue that plagued fire crews all night.
Fire departments from outside the city were brought in to help with the fire. Fire Crews fought this fire to the early hours of the morning.
