Updates: North Carolina Firefighter Dies in Strip Mall Fire Following Mayday

A Pineville, North Carolina firefighter died and a second firefighter injured battling a strip mall fire Saturday night, WNCN.com reported.

The three-alarm fire at the Countryside Shopping Center was dispatched just before 9:30 p.m.

Sister site FireNews.net reported that three Maydays were transmitted during the incident. Units from Charlotte and neighboring departments responded mutual aid.

WNCN reported the fallen firefighter was from the Pineville Volunteer Fire Department.

Charlotte Fire Chief Jon Hannan, speaking on behalf of the Pineville Fire Chief, briefed the media late Saturday night with a statement.

“A mayday call for help was sounded. On scene resources were directed towards the call for help. Within minutes two firefighters from the Pineville Fire Department were removed from the building and transported to Carolinas Medical Center. One of the firefighters did not survive,” said Chief Hannan.

The ATF is currently on the scene assisting in the investigation. The name of the firefighter has not yet been released.
