The La Crosse Volunteer Fire Department in Mecklenburg County, Virginia is mourning the loss of a young firefighter who was killed in a response accident on Saturday.
Josh Smith, 25, was responding in his personal vehicle to a fire call Saturday afternoon when he was involved in a single vehicle accident.
“Since day one, he was a dedicated volunteer, ” Chief Mike Clark told WTVR.
Smith is the second firefighter from the department to die in the line of duty. On October 20, 1992, Lieutenant Gwyn L. Ellis suffered a heart attack while feeding hose lines at the scene of a structure fire, according to The USFA database.
