An off-duty Houston firefighter was shot and killed Monday night by a next-door neighbor after he apparently tried to enter the woman’s house accidentally, KHOU reported.
Firefighter Sam Keen, 27, lived next door to the 64-year=old woman. Police said he had taken a cab home after a night of drinking and went to the wrong house.
“No one did anything wrong. It was just a confluence of events that provoked a tragedy,” Mayor Annise Parker told KHOU. “My understanding is that the firefighter, off-duty, had been out. He did what he was supposed to do: he took a cab ride home, got dropped off in the wrong place and wasn’t aware of it. Tried to get into what he thought was his house and was tragically shot. ”
Police said the woman heard noises on her porch at about 9:30pm and yelled for the man to leave, then as he continued to try to enter she fired through the door and called 911. Keen, a member of the Houston Fire Department since 2010 assigned to Station 58, died at an area hospital. He leaves behind a wife. He had previously served in the Marines.
It was not clear if the woman would face any charges. The case will be sent to a grand jury for review.
The Courier of Montgomery County reported that Keen was also a part-time employee of the Atascocita Fire Department.
